If you are experiencing pain in your tooth when you eat something sweet, you may well have a dental cavity that needs treatment. Whenever you are experiencing any type of tooth pain we urge you to make an appointment to see our dentist, Dr. Robert Bongiorno, at our dental practice, GoodDay Dental. Our expert and highly trained Richmond Hill dentist will be able to completely assess your dental situation and provide you with complete cavity treatment including tooth-colored fillings, if necessary.
When a patient has a dental cavity, the filling material that is used can either be a traditional silver amalgam filling or a tooth-colored composite filling. Our Richmond Hill dentist will make a recommendation on the type of filling that would work best, generally based on the size and location of the cavity. However, in certain circumstances a patient may desire to have a different type of filling material used. Both of these materials have their own benefits and some drawbacks. Tooth-colored composite fillings are a great aesthetic choice for front teeth, or teeth that show when you speak or smile. However, these composite fillings are not as strong as silver amalgam fillings and may chip or crack more easily. Additionally, these fillings may be more expensive as they take more time for the dentist to install, as they are actually bonded to the tooth. However, tooth-colored composite fillings call for removal of less tooth enamel so the tooth remains stronger after the dental process is completed. On the other hand, silver amalgam fillings are much stronger and are generally recommended for fillings on the flat chewing surfaces of the back molars, where the tooth withstands vigorous chewing forces. However, these fillings are not particularly attractive so are not recommended for use when the cavity is in a location that can be easily seen by others.
